Postural hypotension is characterised by a series of unpleasant symptoms when changing body position or exposed to sudden changes in temperature: general weakness, fatigue and dizziness. Poor performance of the muscles in the walls of the veins in the body leads to poor circulation and a slow response to sudden changes. Blood pools in the abdominal area and doesn’t reach the brain fast enough.
Benefits of WBCT in the management of postural hypotension
Regular cold stimuli lead to vasoconstriction that has a “training” effect on the blood vessels. This contributes to restoring normal distribution of the blood.
Protocols for WBCT in postural hypotension
A course of treatment should be conducted under medical supervision, and in conjunction with a supervised exercise programme to condition the “muscle pumps” in the leg veins, along with what is known as “respiratory gymnastics”.
